The jets emitted by Centaurus A's black hole look pretty much the same as the EHT's images of M87, just on a smaller scale. That falls smack in the middle between M87 (6.5 billion solar masses) and the mass of the black hole at the center of our own Milky Way galaxy (about 4 million solar masses). The new Centaurus A observations are also of interest because the black hole at its center is medium-sized: 55 million times the mass of our Sun. "It's a striking feature that will help us better understand jets produced by black holes." "Now we are able to rule out theoretical jet models that are unable to reproduce this edge-brightening," said co-author Matthias Kadler of the University of Würzburg in Germany. But only the outer edges of the jets emit radiation, perhaps due to the jets colliding with galactic gas, thus heating the edge. According to this latest EHT data, the radio emissions form massive lobes emanating outward from Centaurus A. The new images of Centaurus A place even more constraints around the various competing theories, further narrowing the possibilities. The EHT is created by interferometry, which uses light captured at different locations to build an image with a resolution similar to that of a telescope the size of the most distant locations. Interferometry has been used for facilities like ALMA (the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array), where telescopes can be spread across 16 km of desert. Instead, it's a collection of telescopes scattered around the globe. Centaurus A has been studied extensively ever since in the radio, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray regimes.Īs Ars' John Timmer reported back in 2019, the EHT isn't a telescope in the traditional sense. That's because the galaxy boasts an active galactic nucleus, which produces powerful jets that emit light in both X-ray and radio wavelengths that span distances far greater than the size of the galaxy itself. In 1949, astronomers identified Centaurus A as the first known source of radio waves outside the Milky Way galaxy. In 1847, John Herschel noted its peculiar shape-it looks elliptical when viewed from Earth, with a lane of dust superimposed across it.ĮSO/WFI MPIfR/ESO/APEX A. Located in the constellation Centaurus, the galaxy was discovered in 1826 by James Dunlop. "We see up close and personally how a monstrously gigantic jet launched by a supermassive black hole is being born."Ĭentaurus A (aka NGC 5128) is one of the largest and brightest objects in the night sky, making it especially popular with amateur stargazers, although it's only visible from the Southern Hemisphere and low northern latitudes. "This allows us for the first time to see and study an extragalactic radio jet on scales smaller than the distance light travels in one day," said co-author Michael Janssen, an astronomer at Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn and Radboud University Nijmegen. The jet's unusual characteristics could help astronomers answer a few nagging questions about how such jets are produced in the first place. The images also capture the birth of a powerful jet emitting from the black hole. The images enable the EHT to pinpoint the location of the supermassive black hole at the galaxy's center, according to a new paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy. Now, the EHT is back with another exciting breakthrough: images of the "dark heart" of a radio galaxy known as Centaurus A. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration made headlines in 2019 by capturing the very first direct image of a black hole at the center of a galaxy. Of special note is Pete Townshend's effective use of synthesizers and crisp sound of the guitars. John Entwhistle's bass is firm and integrated in full detail with the other instruments. In the 5.1 mix of Quadrophenia, you hear Roger Daltry's strong vocals as well centred and fully encircled by the music. The members of the Who are extraordinary musicians. And don't forget the special effects that rise to a new level of excellence. It can be sublime or sensitive then hit you like a hammer. A "wall to wall" sound is created that is quite airy and seems so light yet covered in heavy textures. Yes the sound has a bright tone but it just seems so vibrant and rich. In my opinion, none of these versions come close to matching the dynamic sound of the 5.1 mix. I have listened to Quadrophenia over the years from LP to CD versions including the SHM SACD. But the most important factor for me was hearing the songs on Quadrophenia take on a whole new meaning through the glorious high resolution 5.1 sound that made me change my opinion of this great Who album: this is a masterpiece from the Who ranking alongside of "Who's Next". I can say this Blu-ray version is a sheer revelation of what high audio quality can be and it captures the full embodiment of a special aural experience. The reason for listening so often was the Wow factor of the gorgeous 5.1 mix. I have listened to the Blu-ray at least six times in the format of 5.1 DTS HD MA 96k 24Bit. It has been a long time coming to hear all these songs in surround sound that, from my perspective, were destined to be heard this way. Now in 2014 a Blu-ray version is released of all 17 recordings from Quadrophenia which contains a 5.1 mix (2013) a stereo remix (2011) and the original 1973 stereo mix. It was not until the 2011 Director's Cut Box Set of 5 discs that surround sound made an appearance in the form of a DVD Audio for only 8 songs (out of 17) mixed in 5.1. Quadrophenia was originally released in 1973 during the era of quadraphonic recordings but this album never received a 4.0 mix to my knowledge (or at least a mix good enough for a quadraphonic release). The album is hugely significant in popular culture, influencing many other artists, musicians and film-makers, inspiring the classic 1979 British film by Franc Roddam and the UK ‘mod revival’ of the 1970s. Quadrophenia is one of the most widely recognised albums of The Who’s career because of its classic depiction of mod culture, its renowned imagery and the magnificent music and powerful performances. The project was intended to reflect the four characters of The Who and features some of Townshend’s most inspired, personal song-writing. Based around the story of Jimmy, Quadrophenia tells the tale of a young mod and his struggle to come of age in the mid-1960s.The story also takes its influence from the band’s early fans from the original mod era, and its themes of teenage angst and disaffection still resonate strongly today. After the 1971 album Who ’s Next, Pete Townshend returned to the rock-opera concept, so dramatically realised through Tommy, with another ambitious double-album masterpiece. )Ī stunning Director’s Cut of the landmark 1973 album produced, authorised and overseen by Pete Townshend. Password Managers Reduce Randomness The screenshot above shows Password Depot's matrix-style randomizer yes, the characters drop as you move your mouse.ĭo you really need to add real-world randomization? Probably not. Among those that offer this real-world randomization are AceBIT Password Depot, KeePass, and Steganos Password Manager. Fortunately, you're almost certainly not the target for this kind of cyberespionage.Įven so, a few password managers actively work to eliminate even the remote possibility of such a focused attack. If you're the subject of such an attack, your security suite probably can't protect you. That sort of directed hacking is extraordinarily unlikely, except in a dedicated nation-state attack, or corporate espionage. Given that information and the seed, the hacker could conceivably replicate the sequence of random numbers (though it would be difficult). However, it's theoretically possible for a skilled hacker to determine the pseudo-random algorithm used. This is fine for everyday use, and fine for most people's password generation needs. If the seed was a 32-bit integer, that means the algorithm would run through 4,294,967,295 other numbers before a repeat. The original seed never turns up again until every other number has come up. The algorithm processes the seed and gets a new number with no traceable connection to the old, and the new number becomes the next seed. This algorithm starts with a number called a seed. Password managers and other computer programs use what's called a pseudo-random algorithm. ![]() Yes, there are a few random number sources based on radioactive decay (Opens in a new window), but you won't find these in the average consumer-side password manager. It does, however, conjure up visions of one or two of the trades Peter Chiarelli made here, but I digress. I said, pardon? I can’t think of a situation where a vaccination record or a test result for a sexually transmitted infection would have anything to do with being able to attend a hockey game. “If you’re asking me for my double vaccine requirement, can you ask someone if they got their STI test? Like how far is this going to go? It’s nobody’s business, especially not the government’s, if I’ve been vaccinated or not.” Steele has every right not to spend one thin dime on the Oilers, although I found the way he worded the reasoning behind his decision humorous. Steele says the OEG’s decision to put in place COVID conditions, as other pro teams are doing, has prompted him to do what the Decade of Darkness didn’t – turn in his tickets. While it appears at first glance that the majority of people feel the trend of requiring COVID measures is a necessary step, as usual, there’s a very vocal minority speaking out against it, as is their right.Ī comment that caught my attention came via CityNews by somebody named Greg Steele, who claims he’s been an Oilers’ season ticket holder since 1983. ![]() ![]() Some of the obligatory outrage at the Oilers’ decision to insist on putting in place safety measures after polling their season ticket base is right here on this website, while there’s plenty more of it to be found on social media and in the news cycle. I’m equal parts amused and surprised by some of the reaction I’ve seen to the Oilers Entertainment Group attaching health and safety requirements – proof of COVID vaccinations or a negative COVID test - to attending Edmonton Oilers games at Rogers Place. A person can be a doctor because we call her doctor: a normative social role, only possible with language. But in a human tribe, the chief and the shaman are roles, distinguishable from the people who happen to occupy them at any given time. In a chimpanzee band, the alpha male is the individual who can intimidate all the other animals into paying obeisance to him. Language, in turn, allows people to generate what might be called social institutions and separable roles by enabling us to confer symbolic value on things. But I can write a few words and evoke in your mind the idea of pain without either of us having to suffer an iota of discomfort. When a chimpanzee howls in pain, she’s actually in pain. That’s because animal signals-such as grimaces, postures, and vocalizations-are tethered to the here and now. But only people can craft sentences that precisely describe future or counterfactual scenarios, and so export their dreams from one mind into the next. Other animals can plan for and imagine the future and remember the past. But again, incremental, seemingly minor enhancements to each of these skills suddenly make it possible for humans to do things that no other animal can: tell each other about the past, the future, and imagined things. Of course, basic building blocks for language are already present in chimps: highly articulate lips and facial muscles, vocal control, sociability. Even de Waal concedes that if there’s a single trait that differentiates people from other animals, this is it. Thus, while chimpanzees may seem wise to spurn the most impractical actions, it’s actually our human willingness to copy everything-even the most meaningless hand gestures-that enables us to develop and pass down game-changing technologies. You may not know why you’re supposed to hold your fingers this particular way when drawing the bow, but you do know that the best hunters all do it this way. Why do we copy pointless motions? As anthropologist Joseph Henrich points out, many complex technological skills must be learned in stages over long periods of time, requiring a high level of trust during the learning process. Chimpanzees quickly intuit that these extraneous actions aren’t necessary for getting the treat, and so they sensibly ignore them. But only human subjects will copy purposeless sequences of hand gestures before releasing the latch-for example, tapping the box three times and waiting five seconds before opening it. Both chimpanzees and human children quickly learn how to open a box to receive a treat by observing an experimenter do it first. We not only learn by watching each other, but we actively demonstrate skills to each other, slowing down and doing things step-by-step in order to make clear how exactly one carves a canoe, threads a needle, or hooks a fish.Įven more oddly, we faithfully copy even actions that seem to have no point at all. On the scale of social animals, chimpanzees are good-even excellent-imitators.īut human beings are another thing entirely. Sure, captive chimpanzees can learn to mimic hand gestures and other actions, and they learn tool use by watching each other. Three examples illustrate this nonlinear shift: Excellent mimicsįirst, our imitation and mimicry skills are significantly more complex than those of our simian brethren. But somewhere along the line, incremental increases in these abilities ignited a combinatorial explosion, producing an entirely new kind of animal. Chimps have intelligence, sociality, dexterity, and communication skills. The differences between humans and chimpanzees are like this. Add grains of sand one at a time to a sandpile, and at some point the sandpile will suddenly collapse-even though all you did was add one more measly grain. Chimps also console injured friends and grieve for the dead.īut biology is defined by nonlinear systems, in which small changes along one dimension produce radical jumps in another. Instead, chimps must learn them from each other, just as humans learn their own cultures’ techniques and norms. ![]() These culturally distinctive behaviors aren’t genetically programmed instincts. ![]() For example, different bands of chimps in the wild have different customs and patterns of tool use. In a recent interview for Nautilus magazine, de Waal argued that chimpanzees boast culture and moral emotions such as sympathy. Years of observing chimpanzees have convinced him that the gap between humans and their great ape cousins is thin and permeable-more a matter of degree than kind. Frans de Waal, one of the world’s foremost experts on chimpanzees, thinks not. |
